1)  Remembering (the Way it Was)

As the cover says this is "an autobiography written by Mary Lovada (Shelton) Chandley in collaboration with her sons, James and William and other members of her family." Mary Lovada's father (Rev. Melvin H. Shelton) was born in Spillcorn and her mother's family lived in the Allegheny community. Three members of her grandfather's family were killed in the infamous Shelton Laurel Massacre. In addition to Mary Lovada's personal memories, each member of her family (three brothers and three sisters) was asked for stories that occurred while they lived in Madison County, NC and Greene County, TN.
Very graphics intensive (more than 100, some more than 100 years old), many of the stories and events cover the years immediately before and during the Great Depression. This book is an unvarnished, accurate description of life during this time. It will be of particular interest to descendants of the Sheltons and Chandleys who originally lived in Madison County. This book has 128 pages, printed from electronic postscript files on 24 lb paper with a beautiful cover in color.
Mary Lovada's son, James D. Chandley, actually wrote, compiled, edited, and typeset all of the material. James was born in 1934 at White Rock, NC. He spent 25 years as a corporate technical writer and consultant retiring in 1997. His previously published works were copyrighted and became the property of the corporations for which he worked. "Remembering" can be ordered from: James D. Chandley, 828 Clear Springs Rd., Limestone, TN 37681. The price is $15 plus $4 for handling and shipping.

2)      THE WAY THINGS WERE by Willie Lewis Coates    2003                                        "All the stories in this book are true. It was our way of life as we grew up. We went by the sings and still do today. I used the recipes shared in this book and still do today. I dont believe in the superstitions too much but I am careful if I walk under a ladder for fear that it may fall on me.  I hope everyone who reads this book enjoys it and learns more about our way of living during the 30s 40s 50s."
This 94 page book has wonderful stories of day to day living, loads of family photographs and genealogy. It includes Grapevine School groups. Willie has included a big section on recipes, gardening by the signs, songs of the era, etc,            Cost is $15 plus 3 shipping/handling available from:  Jan C.
